Buy Signals Are Climbing Back, and the Sell List Just Turned Too

Ten days after OP-17's launch nearly wiped out our rarest buy signal, it has climbed for a full week straight, and the four-digit sell watch list just posted its first pullback.

Ten days ago our board could barely find a single card worth flagging buy_setup, the rarest and most demanding stamp in the system. Today it found fourteen.

buy_setup is deliberately hard to earn. It only fires when a card's price trend is intact, momentum hasn't gone vertical, and supply on the secondary market is visibly drying up before the price has moved to reflect it. In the five days before OP-17's release window, the count sat in a steady band of 30 to 33 names across the whole catalog. Then it fell off a cliff: down to 3 on August 21, as OP-17's pre-release week began, and down to 1 by August 26. It stayed in the low single digits, 1 to 3 names, through OP-17's August 28 English street date and the week that followed.

That quiet is ending. Since September 1 the buy_setup count has climbed every single day: 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 12, and now 14 today, the highest reading since before OP-17's release week began. It's still well under half of the pre-launch baseline, so call this a partial recovery rather than an all clear, but it's the first sustained stretch of growth the stamp has had since the launch.

Two of today's fourteen are the same character at opposite ends of the price range. Portgas D. Ace's leader print is trading at US$49.30 (A$68.34), down 15.0% on the week but still up 23.7% over the month, the kind of pullback inside an uptrend the system's tested patterns actually reward. eBay listings for it have dropped from 91 to 74 over the past month.

His secret rare printing is a cheaper, quieter version of the same story. It's at US$26.57 (A$36.83), down 4.1% on the week and essentially flat on the month, with live eBay supply down from 111 to 72 listings in that time. Neither card has spiked. That's the point of the stamp: it's supposed to fire before a move, not after one.

The sell side is turning too. Sell watch broke four digits for the first time on September 4 at 1,003 names, right as OP-17's leaders kept sliding to new lows. It has come down every day since, 968, then 935, then 922 today, an 8% pullback off that peak. Accumulate has held a tighter range all week, 557 to 600, and sits at 581 today. None of these counts is dramatic on its own, but together they read as a board working its way back to normal buy, hold, and sell proportions after two weeks dominated by one launch.

Out of a catalog of 7,261 tracked prices today, only fourteen earned the board's strongest signal, and 922 are still flagged to watch on the way down. That's context, not a call. The stamp tells you where the system's own tested patterns line up, not what to do with your own collection.

What we're watching

Two live tournament weekends will test whether this recovery holds. Treasure Cups run in Hampton, Virginia and in Athens on September 13, the first mid-tier OP-17-format results since the format settled down. Then September 18 brings the Championship 26-27 Finals Season 1 in Dallas, the largest North American prize-promo event of the season, alongside the release of the Set Sail Deck Set SD01, a new entry-level product line that carries its own reprint risk for whichever staples it includes. If buy_setup keeps climbing through both, that's a real sign the drought has broken. If it stalls out instead, this may turn out to be a pause before the next wave of OP-17 chase cards rather than a genuine turn.
