Every OP-17 Parallel but One Fell Less Than Its Own Base Card

On OP-17's first full day of English supply, four of five parallels gave back less of the week than their own base printing. The fifth, Shanks, went the other way. The liquidity gap explains more of it than the rarity does.

OP-17 hit English shelves on Friday, and the first full day of real supply did what launch weekends usually do to a new set. It knocked the price out of almost everything. What is more interesting than the size of the drop is where the drop landed.

We track both the base printing and the alternate art printing for five OP-17 cards. On yesterday''s board, four of those five pairs show the same shape: the parallel gave back meaningfully less of its week than the plain version of the identical card.

OP17 · OP17-119

$58.36

Loki OP17-119 is the cleanest example. The Secret Rare parallel sits at A$157.17, down 37.4% on the week. The base Loki is at A$33.48, down 70.0%. Same character, same card number, same release date, and a 32.6 point gap in how hard the week hit them.

Kaido

Kaido

OP17 · OP17-062

$21.20

Kaido OP17-062 repeats it. The alt art is at A$52.31, down 65.2%. The base is at A$2.08, down 94.9%, a card that has given back essentially everything it had. That is a 29.7 point spread.

The other two that follow the pattern are Monkey.D.Luffy OP17-079, where the alt art at A$98.62 is down 75.6% against a base at A$0.32 down 97.2%, a 21.6 point gap; and Rocks.D.Xebec OP17-039, where the alt art at A$186.01 is down 53.9% against a base at A$1.19 down 84.5%, a 30.6 point gap.

The pair that breaks it

Shanks

Shanks

OP17 · OP17-020

$31.49

Shanks OP17-020 goes the other way, and it goes the other way hard. The alt art is down 90.0% at A$42.02 while the base is down 84.2% at A$1.19. That alt art is the loudest number on our board this week, and it is the one pair where the parallel took the worse beating.

We are flagging that rather than quietly dropping it, because four out of five with one loud exception is a different thing from a rule. Across the five pairs the median gap still favours the parallel by 29.7 points, but a sample of five is a sample of five, and one of them says no.

The caveat that matters more than the pattern

Before anyone reads this as parallels being sturdier, look at what is actually changing hands. Base Kaido recorded 1,074 sales over the past thirty days. Its alt art recorded 20. Base Luffy: 135 sales against 13 for the alt art.

The base cards are where the volume is, which means the base cards are where the price is being genuinely discovered, one real transaction at a time. A thin card does not reprice downward as quickly, and not because the people holding it are more confident. It is because almost nobody is being forced to transact. Some of that 30 point gap is scarcity doing its job. Some of it is just nothing trading.

That distinction gets lost every launch week, and it is worth holding onto before it hardens into folk wisdom about alt arts holding their value.

Every one of these ten printings currently carries a SELL WATCH stamp, base and parallel alike, so the board is not drawing a distinction between them yet either. The gap is in the size of the fall, not in the direction.

What we're watching

Whether the gap survives contact with volume. Treasure Cup Kissimmee ran on Saturday, the first major North American event of the OP-17 format, and Championship Finals land in Utrecht on 5 September and Dallas on 18 September. If competitive results start pulling specific leaders, the base printings should move first, because they are the ones people buy to play rather than to keep.

We will run the same base versus parallel comparison across the OP-14, OP-15 and OP-16 launch weeks out of our own history and publish whether this pattern is stable, shrinking, or noise. If it is noise, we will say so.

Prices are AUD, converted from USD at 1.3946, and reflect the board as at 29 August 2026.
