A Gold Luffy Rockets 205.9% in a Week, and the Board Still Says Hold

One of the priciest cards on the ledger just gained over 200% in a week, and our system still won't call it a buy. Here's why that matters.

The number of the day belongs to a card most collectors will never hold in hand: the Gold parallel of Monkey.D.Luffy from OP11.

OP11 · OP05-119

$13,000.00

It's now sitting at A$18,402.80, up 205.9% both on the week and the month, and it's still stamped HOLD. That's not a typo or an oversight. Our system's overheating check exists specifically for moves like this: a near-vertical spike, even a spectacular one, doesn't earn a green light just because the chart looks incredible. History backs the caution here too, since dip-buying into this kind of market has historically lost more often than it's won.

It's worth sitting with that number for a second. A 205.9% weekly gain doesn't mean the card is up a bit more than double, it means anyone holding it a week ago is looking at roughly triple their money today, on a card that already carried a five-figure price tag before the spike. Moves like that rarely come from steady collector demand; they usually mean a thin market got hit by one or two outsized sales. That's exactly the kind of pattern our system is built to flag rather than chase.

Today's top moves

Not every gainer today carries a five-figure price tag. Carne, a budget OP03 preconstructed single, jumped 257.1% this week but is still only A$14.16, a reminder that percentage moves on cheap cards can look explosive while barely moving the needle in dollar terms.

Meanwhile the starter deck staple Monkey.D.Luffy from ST01 climbed 95.6% to A$18.19, proving that even the most common early-set cards can catch a wave when the right buyers come looking.

Over in OP16, the alt art Edward.Newgate is up 64.7% to A$53.09, continuing a run that's now also up 47.4% on the month, a slower burn than the Gold Luffy but a steadier one.

And the OP16 alt art Portgas D. Ace added another 44.6% to reach A$57.98, part of a broader lift across that set's alt art lineup this week.

On the flip side, Round 1 Promo cards remain under real pressure. Sanji and Brook from that line are both down more than 60% on the week, and several other names in the lineup are showing double-digit weekly losses too. That decline hasn't reversed course yet.

Zoom out and the board is doing what it usually does on a day like this: a small number of names posting eye-catching gains while the bulk of the tracker sits still. HOLD is still by far the most common stamp across the board today, with a smaller slice of cards flipped to ACCUMULATE and a comparable slice under SELL_WATCH pressure. Big green numbers are everywhere in the headlines, but as always, the stamp underneath the percentage is the part worth reading twice.

What we're watching

The last major OP16-format tournament results land this weekend, with Treasure Cups running in Calgary, Santiago, and Zagreb on August 15-16, right before the format shifts. OP-17, The World's Strongest Warriors, gets its first-ever simultaneous global launch on August 28, with One Piece Day programming in Japan the weekend before on August 22-23. Sets like this tend to pull buyer attention and budget toward the new leaders and away from prior-set staples, so it's worth watching whether today's spikes hold once that shift in demand actually arrives.
