OP17 Confirms Manga Rare Yonko: What It Could Mean for the Originals
OP17 brings Manga Rare treatment to all four original Yonko for the game's 4th anniversary. We checked what that's doing, and not doing, to the OP01 and OP02 cards that already carry those same characters.
OP17, "The World's Strongest Warriors," is shaping up to be the most-anticipated set of the year. It launches August 28 in English (August 22 in Japan, pre-release August 21), and for the first time the EN and JP versions drop on the same day worldwide, no head start for either region. It's also the game's 4th-anniversary set, and Bandai has confirmed Manga Rare treatment for all four original Yonko, alongside two brand-new rarities, Super Leader Parallel and Conqueror's Haki.
That confirmation is worth sitting with for a second, because three of those four Yonko already have their defining early-game cards, and collectors have been holding those cards since the first year of the format. Whitebeard's alt-art leader comes from OP02 [[card:81808b46-f3d5-480d-81b5-63b832020e59]], Kaido's from OP01 [[card:7be00ad3-7eb0-4ea4-912d-b57a1be71bb9]], and Shanks has the OP01 secret rare alt-art [[card:8144e74b-f0f5-4dbe-9dc2-50367be51e2a]] that's been one of the format's recognizable grails since launch. Big Mom is the exception here. She never got an alt-art leader treatment in OP01 or OP02, so she doesn't have an "original" grail the way the other three do, and that makes her the natural control case for whatever happens next.
Right now, the ledger isn't showing much movement on any of them. Whitebeard's OP02 alt-art sits at $102.17 (about A$145.59), down 0.31% on the week and 0.82% on the month, essentially flat. Kaido's OP01 alt-art is at $127.81 (A$182.11), unchanged this week and up 2.76% over 30 days, a mild drift rather than a trend. Shanks' OP01 secret rare alt-art is at $110.88 (A$158.00), flat on the week and up 0.60% on the month. None of these are showing the kind of pre-release positioning we sometimes see when a set's theme is already public.
There's a useful reference point sitting right next to Shanks' alt-art, though. The manga-style parallel of that same card [[card:3a11fe90-712e-465c-b40e-76e749fc196b]] already trades at $3,999.47 (roughly A$5,699.08), a price that has nothing to do with OP17 and everything to do with how thin that print run has always been. It's a reminder that "manga rare" as a treatment doesn't automatically mean expensive. It means expensive when supply is scarce and demand is durable, and OP17's new Manga Rares will have a different print run, different scarcity, and a different relationship to the game's current, much larger player base than a four-year-old promo did.
That is the actual question here, not whether Manga Rare cards command a premium (some clearly do), but whether a new manga-style Whitebeard, Kaido, or Shanks pulls attention and spending toward the newest version of that character, or whether it reinforces the older alt-art as the "real" one for collectors who value being first. We've seen both patterns play out with reprints and new treatments in this game before, and it usually isn't obvious which way it breaks until the actual card art is public and people can compare them side by side.
For now, the honest read is that nothing has moved yet, and that is exactly what we'd expect three and a half weeks out from a set where only the treatment, not the artwork, has been confirmed. The OP01 and OP02 originals are sitting at prices set by four years of accumulated scarcity and nostalgia, not by anything OP17-specific.
