Sorting the promo selloff: which slices are actually falling before OP-17
The losers board has worn OPPR colours for days, but the promo tier median is flat. Segmenting it shows only one slice is genuinely deflating, and the real sell-side pressure built somewhere else entirely.
For the better part of a week the daily losers board has looked like a promo problem. Judge Pack cards, event packs, illustration boxes, all in red, all OPPR. The easy read is that the whole non-tournament-legal collectible tier is being sold down while buyers clear space for OP-17, which lands in Japan on 22 August and in English on 28 August.
We went and segmented it. That read does not hold.
Across the 1,943 active promos carrying a signal on 18 August, the median 30-day move is 0.0 percent. Flat. Not a tier in retreat. Break it into its natural slices and the picture separates cleanly:
- Illustration boxes and premium card collections: 148 tracked, 64.2 percent of them down over 30 days, median -5.2 percent, bottom quartile at -15.4 percent or worse.
- Judge Pack cards: 79 tracked, median +13.4 percent, only 30.4 percent down.
- Event and prize promos: 278 tracked, median 0.0 percent, 32.7 percent down.
- Everything else in OPPR: 1,391 tracked, median 0.0 percent, 40.4 percent down.
One slice is genuinely deflating. The rest are flat with a long, loud tail.
That tail is what has been filling the losers board. [[card:385e92f3-1939-4837-8f01-17aa1cf5625c]] sits at A$20.05, down 59.7 percent over 30 days and 26.0 percent in the past week alone, carrying a SELL_WATCH stamp. Trafalgar Law from Event Pack Vol. 7 is at A$24.42, down 52.1 percent over the month and 35.2 percent over the week. Illustration Box Vol. 8 is at A$52.73, down 77.6 percent. Those are real moves on real cards, and if you are holding them the drop is real. They are also a handful of names out of nearly two thousand.
Meanwhile, in the same Judge Pack family that produced the Chopper drop: [[card:64d93d57-f5a1-4960-803a-ba66844e7fe6]] is at A$33.06, up 16.8 percent over 30 days on 19 recorded sales. Brook from the same pack is at A$23.65, up 24.3 percent. Sealed Judge Pack Vol. 6 is at A$22.31, up 26.7 percent on 93 sales. The slice with the ugliest headline card also carries the strongest median in the tier.
Where the pressure actually built
If capital were rotating out of promos and into OP-17 exposure, the sell-side stamps would show it. They do not. Promo SELL_WATCH counts across 14 to 18 August ran 127, 125, 125, 126, 121. Flat, then slightly lower.
Booster singles over the same five days ran 442, 473, 484, 512, 518. That is 76 additional sell-side stamps in four days, and it accounts for almost all of the overall move from 689 to 717. ACCUMULATE rose too, 562 to 583, so this is not a broad risk-off week. It is specific.
The set medians line up with it. OP16 sits at -1.7 percent over 30 days, OP14 at -1.7 percent, PRB02 at -2.1 percent. The recent tournament-legal sets are the ones giving ground. Older stock is doing the opposite, with OP01 at +3.6 percent. Individual names carry it further: Nami OP15-086 at A$203.80 is down 42.8 percent, Boa Hancock OP16-032 at A$57.99 is down 40.4 percent, and Zehahahahaha! OP16-116 at A$112.22 is down 27.0 percent.
That is a far more ordinary story than a promo collapse. Cards that need to be legal to be wanted soften ahead of a format change. Cards that were only ever collected sit still, except where a specific product overprinted or a specific event pack lost its scarcity story.
What we are watching
OP-17 hits Japan on 22 August, the same weekend as One Piece Day, with the English pre-release on 21 August and wide release on 28 August. The near-simultaneous launch is new, so the usual lag between Japanese price discovery and English street date will be short. Treasure Cup Kissimmee on 29 August is the first major event under the new format.
Three things worth tracking from here. Whether booster SELL_WATCH keeps climbing past the 28 August release or peaks before it. Whether the illustration box slice finds a floor or keeps grinding. And whether Judge Pack strength holds once fresh supply hits shelves and attention moves on.
We will run the segment numbers again next week.
